Chemist / Mass Spectrometrist needed for exciting opportunity in metabolomics research
The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) in Research Triangle Park, NC has recently established a new Metabolomics Core Facility (MCF), headed by Dr. Alan Jarmusch ( The NIEHS MCF uses modern mass spectrometry and data analytics to identify the levels of small molecules in a wide variety of biospecimens (e.g., plasma, urine, cells, tissues). This powerful, cutting-edge scientific method (‘metabolomics’) is rapidly revealing novel and exciting insights into biology and disease. In the pursuit of knowledge, new methodology and data analysis tools are being developed to further metabolomics (and small molecule mass spectrometry) research.

The MCF is looking to hire a chemist whose primary responsibility will be to perform metabolomics analysis using liquid chromatography – mass spectrometry. A prior background in mass spectrometry is preferred. Experience with data processing and data analysis (i.e., converting ‘raw’ data into putative identifications of metabolites and running basic statistical analyses) is helpful but not required; necessary training will be provided. The successful candidate is expected to have education/training in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, chemistry, or similar physical or life science discipline. Candidates with a Master’s or PhD are preferred. Candidates anticipating completion of their Master’s or PhD degree are encouraged to apply.

This is a full time General Schedule (GS) position in the Federal government. The details and application process for this position will be posted soon on USAJOBS. The position will be posted in late Sept or early October, and open for applications for a brief amount of time.
